Description

The stone base of a grain mill was found in a First Century house in Kh. el-Maqatir, which may be identified with the City of Ephraim of John 11:54. Two circular grinding stones, usually made of basalt, were put on the base. The top upper grinding stone was turned by two women to produce flour. The woman on the left takes grain from the basket and pours it through the central hole of the upper mill stone. The flour was collected on a mat and then used to make bread. This drawing illustrates the Gospel verses of Matth. 24:41 and Luke 17:35 that speak of two women grinding at the mill.
