Description
Tiberias was founded in 20 AD by Herod Antipas. In the sixth century AD, the Byzantine emperor Justinian built a wall around the city of Tiberias, which included Mount Berenice. Here the remains of a Byzantine church with unusual cultic objects were uncovered.
In the central apsis, the altar was found to be placed over a large stone that was carved like an anchor stone. It may have been venerated in connection with the activities of Jesus on the Sea of Galilee.
