This reconstruction drawing shows the city of Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee during the Byzantine period.
The original synagogue of the 1st century was later rebuilt. The houses had rooms arranged round an open courtyard. Narrow streets connected the different housing blocks.
Capernaum was the city where Jesus lived after he left Nazareth (Matthew 4.13; Mark 2.1; Luke 4.31; John 2.12) and apart from the Byzantine synagogue, the city would have looked much like this in his time.
