Description

King Herod the Great renewed the Hellenistic city of Jerusalem that by now included the Western Hill. The Temple Mount was enlarged with the building of new and high retaining walls around it and a new Temple graced Mount Moriah that was completely built over, but for its top that could be seen inside the Holy of Holies.
Many new houses were built or revamped in the latest architectural style, new roads were paved and water reservoirs built inside the city walls. This was the city that was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.
This drawing is the fifth in a series of reconstructions of Jerusalem in the times of Kings David, Solomon, Hezekiah, Nehemiah and Herod the Great.
