Description

The Fortress of Nimrud (Qala’at Nimrud, Qala’at Subeibe) was built in 1228-1230 by al-Aziz Uthman, a nephew of Saladin. It was designed to protect the route to Damascus. A few decades later, the Mamluk sultan Baybars enlarged and strengthened the fortress to serve as a stronghold against the Crusaders.
According to Arab legend, the fortress was built by the mighty hunter Nimrud (Gen. 10: 8–9).
