Ephesus Harbour Road (Arcadian Way)

Description

The Harbour Road or Arcadian Way led from the harbour to the city (this colonnaded street was named after the Emperor Arcadius, who rebuilt it at the end of the 4th century A.D.). This harbour had also been used to ship many Christian martyrs to Rome to die in the amphitheatre there. For this reason, one of the early Church fathers, Ignatius, called Ephesus “the highway of martyrs.”
