Ephesus Harbour

Description

This picture was taken in spring time, when some water collects in the basin of the former harbour, revealing its previous outline (left of the picture).
By the time the church in Ephesus received the letter to their church and the Book of Revelation from the messenger, it was already becoming clear that the harbour was silting up. By the 6rd century A.D., the harbour could no longer be used and the city relocated to the area near the Artemisium.
This harbour had also been used to ship many Christian martyrs to Rome to die in the amphitheatre there. For this reason, one of the early Church fathers, Ignatius, called Ephesus “the highway of martyrs.”
