Description

This drawing shows a hiding system at Kh. Eitun in the Judean Hills dating from the Bar Kokhba period. Underground cavities and installations were extensively used as hiding complexes, escape routes, and places of refuge. Various rooms were connected by low tunnels that could be blocked to keep unwanted visitors out, for example by the round blocking stone visible in the centre of the drawing. Some of the storage rooms had large niches in its walls (left), and other rooms and the side walls of narrow tunnels had niches for oil lamps. The vertical shaft has indentations for climbing up and down.
