Description
This monastery was founded by Martyrius in the fifth century. It is located about 6 km (4 miles) east of Jerusalem. This very large monastery was a coenobium type monastery and is surrounded by a massive stone wall. There are two entry gates in the east wall. Inside the monastery is a large church, a refectory, living quarters and a service area. Outside the northeast corner is a hospice or pilgrims.
