Description

This monastery is located on top of a small hill beside the ancient road from Jerusalem to Jericho. This site was built by the empress Eudocia in 459. It consists of four architectural elements, a basilica dedicated to St. Peter, living quarters for monks, a tower, and a large reservoir. The reservoir was used by pilgrims that went down to baptismal sites on the Jordan River, or from these sites back to Jerusalem.
