Description

Here we see the remains of the City Hall (Prytaneion), which had a place of worship dedicated to Artemis. During the excavations, three statues of Artemis were found here and a sacred flame was kept constantly burning to Hestia Boulaia, the goddess of the hearth.
The City Hall was also the office of the town clerk, which reminds us of Acts 19.35, where we read about the town clerk in the time of Paul, who after the uproar in the theatre “quieted the crowd and said: “Men of Ephesus, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?”
