Description

Machaerus was one of the desert fortresses built by Herod the Great. The location resembles that of Masada.
In this close-up view, we see the remains of the palace that was built by Herod the Great. The restored columns belong to an open peristyle courtyard and the room to its right may have been the banqueting room where Salome danced before Herod Antipas.
