Description

Beth Shemesh was a city allocated to the tribe of Judah and associated with the journey of the Ark of the Covenant. This large underground cruciform-shaped water reservoir was excavated in Beth Shemesh. It was constructed during the time of the Kings of Israel. Water was usually drawn through a shaft on the surface and an elaborate staircase gave access to the cistern itself for maintenance purposes.
