Gamla Synagogue

Description

This is a reconstruction drawing of the Synagogue of Gamla, on the Golan Heights, overlooking the Sea of Galilee. It dates from the 1st century A.D., making it one of the earliest synagogues excavated. Four tiers of steps were located behind the columns which supported the central part of the roof. The building was made entirely of basalt stones and the drawing reflects this. A mikveh is located in front of the synagogue.
When the Gospels record that Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues (Matthew 4.23; Mark 1.39; Luke 4.15), these places of worship would have been similar to the one excavated in Gamla. Perhaps he even taught in this synagogue.
