Description

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was regarded by ancient writers as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The temple measured 425 feet long and 220 feet wide and was supported by 127 columns. Each fluted column was 57 feet high and was capped with an Ionic capital. This single standing column has been assembled from fragments that were found in the excavations.
The sanctuary of Artemis was surrounded by a public garden, called Paradise, a Persian word for a formal garden. This sacred compound, called Artemiseum, served as a sanctuary for people who were accused, but innocent of a committed crime.
