Description

This is a reconstruction drawing of the Façade of the Temple that was built by Herod the Great. The dimensions of the façade were 100 by 100 cubits (172 feet, 52.5m) and, according to representations on coins, it was adorned with four columns and an entablature on top. Remains of large rosettes were found in the excavations below the Western and Southern Walls that probably decorated the entablature.
Above the central doorway were five cedar beams that functioned as a lintel. According to Josephus, the parts of the Façade in between the pillars was overlaid with gold.
