Description

A large gymnasium and adjacent synagogue were located less than a mile to the north of the Temple of Artemis, next to a Roman colonnaded street. This street follows the same route as the 1,600 mile long Persian Royal Road, which began at Susa and ended here.
Between the street and the synagogue, shops have been excavated which indicate that Christians and Jews lived and traded peaceably together. One of the Jewish shops belonged to Jacob, who was a dyer of fabric. The dyeing vats can still be seen in an adjacent room.
