Description

This beautiful monument is known as the Temple of Hadrian, who was Roman Emperor from 117-138 AD. From the inscriptions on the architrave, we know that a citizen of Ephesus called P. Vedius Antoninus Sabinus dedicated it to the emperor in 118 A.D.and it was therefore not yet in existence during the time when the Gospel was preached. It was incorporated into the Baths of Varius and the plaster copies of the original reliefs (the originals are in the Ephesus Museum) give a flavour of the fine decoration seen on the Curetes Street.
