Description

This view shows some of the chambers and gates on the south side of the Temple. In front of these chambers was a terrace, called the Hel in Hebrew.
It was the custom during the Passover for the Sanhedrin to come out on the Temple terrace or Hel and teach the people from the Scriptures.
Our first glimpse of Jesus comes during the Passover feast at the Temple at Jerusalem when he was twelve years old (Jesus is represented as the small figure in blue on the right of the terrace above the steps). It was in the company of such scribes and teachers that Joseph and Mary found Jesus. It is tempting to speculate that, in view of the typical nature of this feast that Jesus posed questions concerning the sacrificial lamb and the great purpose which lay behind the solemnities of the Passover Feast.
