David’s Palace in Jerusalem

Description

In the excavations of Yigal Shiloh, which took place between 1978-’84, this area in the City of David was known as “Area G”. The earliest remains are stone filled terraces from the Jebusite period. In the tenth century B.C., this terraced structure was destroyed, presumably by King David, and replaced with a stepped stone structure that may have served as a foundation for his palace that stood higher up the hill. During the time of King Hezekiah, a dwelling was partly built into this stepped structure. The city wall on top (green) was built by Nehemiah and later fortified in the Hellenistic period with a large tower (blue).
