The exposed section at the Western Wall Plaza is almost 190 feet (60 m) long. At the northern side of the plaza is an entrance to the Western Wall Tunnels, which allows access to an additional 787 feet (240 m) of Herod’s retaining wall.
After the 1967 Six-Day War, the Israeli Ministry of Religious Affairs began excavations to expose its northern extension, digging beneath the Muslim Quarter. Through these tunnels you can walk alongside the wall as far as the Antonia Fortress and exit onto the Via Dolorosa. The area is now controlled by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation.
