Four-roomed house such as that of Obed-edom

Description

This is a reconstruction drawing of a typical Israelite four-roomed house. The Ark of the Covenant stayed in a house such as this when it was carried “aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite” (2 Sam. 6.10). The entrance led into a courtyard, which had two rows of pillars. The living quarters were located at the back of the building. We can only speculate as to where the Ark would have been stored, but it appears that the most likely place was in one of the roofed-over spaces on either side of the courtyard.
