Description
The agora (market place) of ancient Smyrna was surrounded by porticoes and had a magnificent basilica on its northern side (left in the picture). An arched gateway gave access to the agora from the west (right in the picture). According to ancient sources, a statue of Zeus stood in the center of the market place.
