Description

The most important temple in the entire complex of the Asclepium was located between the Treatment Centre and the courtyard. Although constructed after the time the Book of Revelation was written, it gives us an idea of the prominence of the serpent god, whose other title was Soter, or Saviour and what the believers had to contend with. Only the base has been preserved, but it is clear that the building is modeled after the Pantheon in Rome. It would have been very impressive, with its domed roof having a circular opening to allow light to illuminate the mosaics on the floors and walls. Niches built around the interior housed images of gods of healing, with the main niche containing a statue of Asclepius himself.
