Description
Arad is an ancient Canaanite city in the Negev, mentioned in Numbers 21.1. The Canaanites were initially successful in their fight against Israel, but the tables were soon turned when the Israelites destroyed the city. Arad also features in the list of Canaanite cities that were conquered by the Israelites Joshua 12.14).
During the excavations that took place from 1962-84, remains of a Canaanite house were discovered dating from the 3rd millennium BC. Many houses had a wall surrounding the courtyard, a house with one or two rooms and several outbuildings and platforms for cooking and food preparation. The door of the house was set in one of the long walls, a feature that was typical of the period.
