Description

A reconstruction drawing of Solomon’s Temple, based on archaeological evidence and the description in 1 Kings 6.
Two bronze columns stood in the Porch of Solomon’s Temple, named Yachin and Boaz. Inside the Holy Place stood the Lampstand (menorah), the Table of Shewbread and the Altar of Incense. A wooden partition, made of olive wood, separated this chamber from the most Holy Place.
The Holy of Holies is placed on the Rock, which is actually the top of Mount Moriah and visible inside the Islamic Dome of the Rock. A special emplacement was cut in the rock for the Ark of the Covenant (1 Kings 8.6,21). The Ark stood below the wings of two giant cherubim.
Surrounding the sanctuary were chambers, three stories high, with ladders and trap doors allowing communication between them.
