Description
The Temple was surrounded by the Temple Court. In front of the Temple stood the Altar of Burnt Sacrifice, where animals were offered. The Altar was square, each side measuring approximately 30 cubits (50 feet, 16 m) and about 10 cubits (17 feet, 5.25m) high. A ramp was constructed to the south of the Altar. Fires were lit in two places, although on high holidays another two were lit. Jesus remarks on the importance of the Altar in Matthew 23.18-20.
