The Tomb of St. John is located at the east end of the Basilica of St. John the Theologian. John was one of the disciples of Jesus, also known as the Beloved Disciple. It is usually understood, although not universally agreed, that it was this disciple of Jesus who wrote the Gospel of John, the Epistles and the Book of Revelation. Because of the authorship of the Book of Revelation, John is intimately associated with the Church of Ephesus. He was, according to tradition, the first Bishop of Ephesus.
