Description
Reconstruction drawing of the soreg with the Temple Warning inscription. Middot 2.3 describes how, inside the Temple Mount was “a latticed railing (soreg) ten handbreadths high.” Josephus refers to this feature, describing it as “a stone balustrade with an inscription prohibiting the entrance of a foreigner under threat of the penalty of death (Ant. 15.417, also War 5.193-194; 6.125). In Ephesians 2.14, it was probably to this very barrier that Paul was referring when he writes that Jesus had “broken down the middle wall of partition”.
