Description

In Kh. el-Maqatir, a wine press was discovered. The remains of a Bronze Age gate chamber was used as the treading floor. Grapes were picked and put on a circular area (right) before being placed on the treading floor. After treading, thecrushed grape skins were placed in circular baskets under a lever beam with stone weights to get the last must (grape juice) out. The must flowed first into the centrally placed settling tank. The purified must was then placed in a clean tank which had a mosaic floor, from where the wine was poured into jars. A wine press is mentioned in Isa. 63:3 and Rev. 14:20.
