Description
The remains of villas belonging to the wealthy have been excavated on the slope across the Curetes Street. Most of the rooms have mosaic floors and the walls are elaborately decorated with frescoes. Some of the officials of the province (Asiarchs – Acts 19.31) who were friends of Paul may have lived in these sumptuous houses and it is possible that Paul did some of his preaching work here.
Paul wrote to the believers in Philippi “I know both how to be abased and I know how to abound” (Philippians 4.12). Some of the “abundance” he may have received from the owners of these magnificent dwellings.
