Description

This marble relief of a winged Nike now stands on Domitian Square, but was once was part of the arch over the Hercules Gate. The goddess of victory holds a laurel wreath in her left hand and a palm branch in the other. The well-known “swoosh,” symbol of the athletic shoe and clothing manufacturer, is based on the shape of the wing of Nike in another representation.
The theme of victory reminds us of the promise which Jesus made to the believers in Ephesus: “To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God” (Revelation 2.7).
