Description
Machaerus was one of the desert fortresses built by Herod the Great. Here we see the remains of the palace that was built by Herod the Great. The restored columns belong to an open peristyle courtyard. Next to the courtyard was the banqueting room where Salome charmed Herod Antipas with a dance that led to the death of John the Baptist (Matt. 14:1-13; Mark 6:16-29; Luke 3:19,20; 9.9).
