Abram and Sarai lived near the Oaks of Mamre (alonei mamre) close to Hebron.  Remains of an Edomite enclosure built by Herod the Great in the 1st century have been found here. The reconstruction drawing shows that this place remained a sacred site associated with Abraham for a long time. The construction of the wall, with bevelled stones and pilasters is characteristic of other Herodian buildings such as the Tomb of the Patriarchs (Machpelah) in Hebron and the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
