Schematic diagram of a typical family burial cave from the first century AD. The rock-hewn forecourt (lower left) leads to the entrance of the burial cave, through a narrow opening closed by a rolling or blocking stone. The bodies were placed in kokhim, or burial niches cut out of the rock.
