Description
During the Feast of Passover, four cups of wine were placed on the table. Each cup had a name, commemorating the redemption of Israel out of Egypt, as mentioned in Exodus 6. 6-7:
“I will bring you out”
“I will rid you out of their bondage”
“I will redeem you”
“I will take you to me”
At least two of these cups are mentioned in Luke 22.17,20. Jesus did not drink the fourth cup, but promised to do so “when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26.29).
